BMW stated that the E46's body shell was 70% stiffer than the E36's. While the car's weight was reduced because of extensive usage of aluminum in places like the hood and brake calipers as well as the suspension, it was ultimately heavier than its predecessor due to an increased number of features and a plusher, leather-lined interior. The good news is that E36s are very cheap and this is one of the most affordable ways into any BMW. £1350 will get you behind the wheel of an 80k-mile 328i Convertible, you can get yourself a 320i SE Saloon with 85k miles for £1500, or a 318iS for £1520. We also found an 80,000-mile 325i Coupé for £1650, a 150k-mile 323i Touring for £1800 The Perfect First Project Car. A great engine and a solid platform make the E36 arguably one of the most customizable cars in the US. Plenty of BMW E36s made their way to the US, so they are cheap and readily available, another sign of a good project car. They even made a Miata-like version of the E36, called the Z3. Nothing wrong with E46M3. They are great cars and faster than the E36M3. But used examples cost about $10k more and mods for them are more expensive. For example, a stage II E36 Supercharger is $5000 to $7500; a stage II E46 supercharger is $10,000 to $12,000.

MSRP started on target at $35,800. BMW North America listed a still respectable zero-to-60 time of 6.0 seconds for this 240-horsepower M3. Orders flooded in. Where BMW sold about 5100 copies of the original M3 during its entire four-year run in the States, this new one found more than 10,000 buyers in just its first year. 1993 325i (e36).Turns over like gangbusters, but won't fire! Daily driver until yesterday morning. I checked the fuel pump, and I can hear it whirring, so I think it's fine. Plenty of battery juice, plenty of gas. I don't know how to determine the various relays & fuses, but all of them look intact. Tapped on the relays, in case they were
Cheap coilovers and reversed m3 strut mounts for more caster and a little bit of extra camber. Those little lock rings for more steering angle. And check if your rear trailing arm bushings are good so your rear doesn't wobble or do weird things. IMO these are the mods that make an e36 a good car without spending a lot of money and time working
E36 for driving experience, but e34 wins in looks and interior. I personally think the e36 is a far better looking car on the exterior, and they both feel equally as cheap on the interior. The e34 has more factory sound deadening so it’s a bit quieter but if you dynamat an e36 it’s quieter than a stock e34.
uter. Well, I don't think anyone would disagree that BMW builds substantial engines. "The 1.9 gets the M44 engine from the rest of the E36 range, a good little engine but the OBD-II system makes modifications difficult. This was later replaced by the 1.9 M3TU 8 valve engine with much less power" More info here.
The BMW E36 generally improved on the previous-gen 3-Series on multiple fronts and is a good first car for BMW shoppers in the used market: Relatively more fuel-efficient – the 328i is one of the thriftier used 3-Series models.
The first is that a hero car, an all-time great, cannot always live up to your personal expectations. That exact problem had felled the E46 M3 for me. It was, and probably still is, a great car. CliffNotes: Should I get an E36 as my first car. In about a year I will get my license and my parents have told me that they will spend $8,000 on a car for me. So far I have knocked my choices down to an E36 or E46 328i and if I were to add $2K then an E36 M3/4/5 maybe :D. My question to you The E36 is an hard car to drive, and unless you’re a very, very good and experienced driver, you won’t get a thing out of it. The MX-5 however is rather slow, so you’ll get to its limit With all this extra power, the E36 M3 could go from 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) in around 5.6 seconds, a whole second quicker than the E30 model. Top speed also increased over the standard E30 M3 to a limited 250 km/h (155 mph). On the outside, the E36 M3 was much more conservative than the track orientated E30. In general, the most standard model of the BMW E36 M3 is the four-door sedan. These models cost anywhere from $20,000 today. The newer the car and the better its condition, the prices can increase to up to in excess of $50,000. These prices are similar to what they were back in the first years of production. This is a big compilation of me building my E36 Trackcar! In this video you will the process in 1 year of building this car, from stock to full track car. A l

This will require some welding experience or a friend who can weld. The e36 is an amazing car but has some lethal weakpoints in the rear of the chassis, Particularly their subframes. Theres several places that sell fixes for this such as Akg and uuc. Heres the list: rear shock mount reinforcement plates.
A BMW 3-series is the best BMW for first-time car owners. The 3-series can reach 240,000 miles, which means a used model has plenty of life left. Furthermore, compared to other BMWs, 3-series have relatively low annual maintenance cost ($780) and reasonable annual insurance cost ($2,400). However, that certainly doesn’t answer the question

The E36 has a lot of desirable traits from a track car perspective. Near 50/50 weight distribution, a bulletproof inline-6 cylinder engine on 325i/is, 328i/is and M3 models, and relatively lightweight (by modern standards), all make the E36 a standout option in the world of track day builds.
